On Friday, April 27, 2007 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Sidney Lanier implemented a 120-day moratorium on acceptance of new appointments/applications for private boat dock permits. This moratorium was imposed to allow the Corps to complete the evaluation and processing of
pending dock permit applications and appointments which had been received prior to the moratorium and to ensure the maximum carrying capacity of 10,615 boat docks was not exceeded.
In response to a number of water-related deaths on Lake Lanier this year, Jonathan Davis, Operations Project Manager, has redirected all available park ranger staff to promoting water safety through increased one-on-one contacts with lake visitors. While this will mean the public will see more rangers on the beach and in boats, these rangers will not be performing shoreline management
duties. As a result of this focused effort on water safety, the current moratorium on accepting new appointment/application for boat dock permits will be extended until October 24th.
“I regret that shoreline management and other administrative programs must be temporarily suspended,” said Davis, “but trust everyone understands the importance of public safety and why it is necessary for us to take these extraordinary measures to help prevent further loss of life.”
