Lake Lanier Association (LLA) represents 4000 members that are interested in keeping the Lake clean and full in order to continue its economic contribution to the State of Georgia. The Lake is the drinking water supply for 4 million Georgians, visited by over 8 million people4 annually for recreation, and supports a $5.5 Billion economy.
The Association does not support this sewage discharge permit for several reasons:
- The pollution limits in the permit are less stringent than the technology available today.
- The receiving water (Flat Creek) is an impaired water in Georgia, and may not have new sewage discharges until EPD has determined a solution for the impaired water situation.
- The Georgia Supreme Court judged that a permit for Gwinnett County with the same specifications as this permit was illegal.
- The current Flat Creek plant is operating at a far better level of pollution than called for by the permit. Permit limits at the Gwinnett County level can be achieved by Flat Creek, and should be reflected in this permit.
- Flat creek and the City of Gainesville have had a history of polluting the area of sewage discharge. Algae Blooms have been prevalent in Flat Creek. Drastic measures should be implemented to assure that errors are eliminated in the operation of the plant
- Virtually no one swims in Flat Creek due to the history of Pollution in the area.
The comment letter from Smith Gambrell and Russell dated 10/23/2006 has not had a response.
